When to start a bedtime routine for your baby

The NHS UK website says, “you may feel ready to introduce a bedtime routine when your baby is around 3 months old”. However, there is no set age to start getting your little one into a bedtime routine. Of course, you will always do what’s best for you and your baby.

Creating your baby’s pre bed routine

Like us adults, babies love routine and that’s why creating a consistent bedtime routine can help your little one to maintain healthy sleep habits and sleep for longer.

Carrying out the same steps each evening will help your baby wind down and know that it’s time to go to sleep – it’s a bit like us having a cup of herbal tea and reading a few pages of our favourite book before nodding off.

Every baby’s sleep routine will be different. Below are some ideas that you can include in your little ones pre bed ritual:

A calming environment is key

A cosy, calm environment prepares your baby for a relaxing night’s sleep. We don’t want to overstimulate them with too much noise or action.

At home, it may help if you:

– Turn the TV off or turn the volume down

– Keep the lights low

– Keep the noise level lower than usual – if you have older children, encourage them to play quietly in the evenings. You could even get them to help with the bathtime routine
